Cannes Film Festival

For five consecutive years I was assigned by Le Monde to produce one five column picture a day to illustrate their Cannes Film Festival pages, a honour which I relished every May for the two week festivities on the Côte d'Azur. The idea wasn't to necessarily picture the attending stars but more to produce a off-beat picture worthy of the allotted space in France's leading daily newspaper, the equivalent of say the New York Times or the London Times.

As the picture had to be delivered by latest ten in the morning to meet the deadline, Le Monde publishes at midday, I had to ensure that I had something ready to be transmitted by early morning which meant producing something the day or night before that was still newsworthy yet unseen by the scores of other photographers in attendance. Not such an easy task unless you work the 'behind the scenes' goings on that sometimes worked and sometimes didn't.

These pictures are a selection from the thousands I made from 1995 to 2000, many of which were published and some that haven't yet seen the light of day.
