Alexandria

Alexandria

Commissioned by Geo magazine, France to expand the series on mediterranean port cities that I started with my essay on Naples I proposed to explore Egypt's thriving antique city, home to the world's largest library where ultra modern meets the ancient in a juxtaposition that I found fascinating and unique in northern Africa if not the world.

Over a period of three weeks I explored on foot every nook and cranny, often losing my bearings in the labyrinth of alleys. rarely have I found such spontaneous friendship offered to a stranger who by my caucasian looks stands out like a sore thumb.
The essay ran over twelves pages in a special edition of the magazine with a text by French writer Jacques Maigne, one of the ultimate stories we produced together.
